Labor Day Weekend in Tahoe Donner

There is something special about Labor Day weekend in Lake Tahoe. Summer hasn't quite surrendered to fall, but the pace begins to change. Saddle Up for the Wild West Fest

One of the weekend's highlights is the 7th Annual Wild West Fest, taking place Saturday, Sept. 5, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The evening brings a little frontier spirit to the Sierra with a ranch-style barbecue, live music, equestrian performances, pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and other Western-inspired activities.

It is the kind of event that works for the whole family—and a particularly memorable way to celebrate the final big weekend of summer in the mountains.

Get Out on the Golf Course

Labor Day weekend is also an excellent time to enjoy Tahoe Donner's scenic golf course. With mountain views and crisp Sierra air, a round of golf becomes as much about the setting as the game itself.

The golf course is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the driving range opening at 6:30 a.m. For those hoping to sharpen their game, daily skills clinics and private lessons provide another option.

Whether you're playing a full round or simply spending a morning on the range, it is a quintessential Tahoe way to ease into the long weekend.

Ride the Trails

With more than 60 miles of trails, Tahoe Donner provides plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding landscape on two wheels.

Bikeworks offers mountain-bike and e-bike rentals, guided rides and other ways to get out on the trails. For anyone looking to combine exercise with sightseeing, a ride through the forest and into areas such as Euer Valley can turn an ordinary afternoon into a mountain adventure.

There is also a little extra incentive to stop by on Saturday: the annual Bikeworks used-bike sale runs Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with used bikes offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you're planning to ride, however, take note that the Nature Loop between the Trout Creek Recreation Center and the bridge is scheduled for closure in early September for trail repairs. The loop portion will remain open.

Trade Two Wheels for Four Hooves

For a completely different way to experience the Sierra, head to the Tahoe Donner Equestrian Center.

Families with younger children can enjoy pony rides, while more experienced riders can sign up for private lessons or a trail ride through the surrounding landscape. Trail rides are scheduled Friday through Monday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., making horseback riding an easy addition to a holiday-weekend itinerary.

There is something particularly appropriate about ending summer on horseback, surrounded by pine forest and mountain air.

Make Time for the Water

Labor Day may signal the unofficial end of summer, but there is still time for one more pool or lake day.

Northwoods Pool remains open through Sept. 7 on weekends and holidays, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving families one last chance to enjoy the waterslide and poolside setting.

Trout Creek Recreation Center offers another option, with recreation and kiddie pools open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

And then there is Donner Lake.

At the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina, visitors can spend the day swimming, relaxing on the beach or getting out onto the water in a kayak, stand-up paddleboard or pedal boat. The marina remains open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Labor Day.

For many Tahoe visitors, that may be the perfect Labor Day tradition: a morning on the lake, an afternoon in the mountains and an evening spent enjoying good food with friends and family.

Don't Forget the Food

A holiday weekend is always better when there is somewhere welcoming to gather after a day outside.

Tahoe Donner's dining options remain active throughout the weekend, including The Lodge Restaurant & Pub, Alder Creek Cafe, Pizza on the Hill, Marco Polo Grill and the Marina Grill.

The Lodge offers breakfast and lunch daily, with dinner served every evening through Sept. 13. Alder Creek Cafe is open Wednesday through Sunday, while Pizza on the Hill remains open daily through Sept. 8. At the lake, the Marina Grill continues serving through Labor Day.

In other words, you don't necessarily have to leave the recreation behind when it's time to eat.

A Fitting End to Summer

Labor Day weekend has traditionally been a moment of transition—a final opportunity to enjoy the freedom and outdoor rhythm of summer before school, schedules and cooler weather take over.
