Tahoe Conservancy 2024-2029 Plan

One of the benefits of purchasing a home in Truckee and Lake Tahoe is the close proximity to miles of breathtaking forests and meandering trails. Walking from your property to hike, bike or cross-country ski is a way of life in the Tahoe Basin.

Many homes also back up to National Forests, which provides endless views of undisturbed landscapes. Additionally, some homes are located next to conservancy land, or parcels that are preserved from any type of development.

The Tahoe Conservancy owns and manages approximately 4,700 parcels of land totaling around 6,500 acres on the California side of the Basin. View the map of Tahoe Conservancy Parcels.

California Tahoe Conservancy

The California Tahoe Conservancy is a state agency that was established in 1984, and they have purchased many parcels around the Tahoe Basin. Their mission is to lead California’s efforts to restore and enhance the natural and recreational resources of the area. Their jurisdiction spans 236 square miles.

The Conservancy is one of ten state conservancies in California that collectively work towards conserving, protecting, and restoring our natural resources. They also work towards providing public recreational opportunities for those with disabilities. In addition to protecting the natural landscape, their programs also include aiding locals through affordable housing.

They are mostly funded by state special revenue funds from programs such as the Lake Tahoe license plate, Habitat Conservation Fund, and Environmental License Plate Fund. They pursue state and federal grants, state bonds and one of their strategies is to seek more public-private opportunities.
