Keeping Tax Revenue in Truckee

In November 2024, Truckee voters approved Measure E, a local initiative that will enhance essential town services. The measure introduces a 0.5% increase in the local sales tax, projected to generate approximately $3.5 million annually over the next 15 years.
Another important part of the measure addresses how much tax revenue collected will benefit the community. Prior to Measure E, only about 24 cents of every dollar paid in sales tax by residents and visitors shopping in Truckee returned to the town. This measure seeks to increase the portion of local sales tax revenue that stays within the community, ensuring better funding for essential services.
The measure approves funding for several key areas:
Preparation for Wildfires and Natural Disasters
Measure E funding will strengthen roadside vegetation management, expand evacuation planning, improve emergency operations, and bolster disaster preparedness. This additional funding is key to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike.
Provides Reliable and Accessible Transit
Transit services are a lifeline for many in the community, reducing congestion and environmental impacts. Measure E now establishes a locally dependable funding source for the TART Connect micro-transit program. This is currently funded only through June 2025. The measure will also support enhancements to transit facilities including the expansion Public Service Center Transit Facility. These initiatives will further leverage existing state and federal transit funding.
Protects Our Local Waterways
Truckee’s local waterways are vital to the region’s environment and way of life. With Measure E, the Town can advance programs and projects like the Trout Creek Restoration and the Donner Lake Interagency Partnership for Stewardship. These efforts aim to protect water quality, reduce pollution, and build resiliency in our watershed.
Keeps Community Facilities Safe and Clean
Measure E will fund maintenance and improvements to facilities such as new parks and the Railyard Mobility Hub. It will ensure that these spaces remain well tendered and safe and accessible for all.
Expands Workforce Housing
To address the housing needs of Truckee’s local workforce, Measure E will support programs like the Truckee Home Access Program, the piloted Rooted Renters Program, and the New Deed Restriction Program. These initiatives aim to provide affordable housing for critical members of our community.
The measure received significant support from the community, with nearly 61% of voters in favor. The Truckee Town Council certified the election results on December 10, 2024.
A Citizens' Oversight Committee has been established to ensure that the funds are spent appropriately and as intended, maintaining transparency and accountability in the use of the generated revenue.
