Lake Tahoe Snow Report
Happy New Year!
January began with a winter storm that has increased the amount of runs and lifts operating at local ski resorts at Lake Tahoe. The storm over the weekend brought a foot of snow to the base areas, and almost 2 feet at higher elevations.
The polar front that dropped down into the area is keeping temperatures very cold. As forecasters call for more precipitation over the coming week, we expect a few more feet of snow at Lake Tahoe.
Because some of the upper mountain lifts were closed due to winds, the next few days promise untouched terrain for powder hounds.
Northstar and Palisades Tahoe now require parking reservations, so be sure to check their websites for more information. If you are carpooling, you will not need reservations.
Additionally, Palisades Tahoe now has a gondola that leads from Palisades to Alpine Meadows. Guests no longer need to get out of their gear to ride the shuttles.
Snow Forecast
We begin the week with a drier pattern and sunny skies. Temperatures are colder so be sure to dress warm. The winds have died down, but the north wind is still bringing gusts to the mountain tops.
Another storm is forecast to develop later on Tuesday. Unlike the atmospheric river storms that come from the Pacific, the next round of storms are dropping down from the north. This means the precipitation forecast is lighter.
The forecast for Wednesday calls for more snow and gusty winds at times. Winds will be between 20 to 30mph. Lake Tahoe should receive up to 8 inches of snow during the day and another 6 inches in the evening. The image below is the forecast for precipitation for Wednesday.
Overall, the base level should receive almost a foot of snow, with upper mountain areas forecast to have another foot and a half of snow by Thursday.
It may be that the winds keep upper lifts closed on Wednesday, making Thursday another epic day for powder hounds on the upper mountain.
